What is SOPA?

According to the author, Brian Barrett, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is essentially a bill that will allow intellectual property owners to shut down a website that they believe is copyrighting their material. There has been a lot of controversy over this bill because if it passed, random websites would be shut down and we would not have a clue. SOPA has been postponed as of right now but voting should happen sooner or later. I honestly do not think it is going to pass because there are so many people that are completely against it. According to Brian, SOPA is just a bad thing. It should never ever be passed. The Stop Online Piracy Act is just like any controversial bill before it, it will take forever to vote on it or maybe eventually it will just disappear and nobody will remember SOPA. SOPA is aimed to protect United States property, and in some way that is a good thing, but the internet is a different story. The internet is not something that is meant to be controlled, no matter how hard the government tries to control it, they cannot. If this bill was passed, the internet would change as we know it today. SOPA just should not happen, and that’s that.

I completely agree with you. I am relieved that SOPA has been taken off the table for now because if it did pass, thousands of companies would be at risk. If this bill was originally to protect the United States property, but has now trickled down to small business owners and Internet sites there is a problem. I think we all know that if there United States really did have an issue with intellectual property theft, they would be able to take care of it quite easily without having to pass a bill that will affect the entire country. Hopefully you are right and this bill never passes.

  2. I would agree with you in this blog. SOPA should never be passed and we fight the new bills like a bill by Harry Reid under the name cybersecurity this bill is only in the beginning stages. The government clearly wants to censor the internet so that’s what they’re going to do we cannot stop them. Some big company probably paid of some of the congressmen. I agree with you the internet should never be controlled but sooner or later the government will pass a bill that will allow them to. I liked your ending SOPA just should not happen, and that’s that.

  3. I agree with you completely, I do not thing the SOPA act with ever pass, and it is just a big waste of time. I do not think putting something on someone else’s website is or should be a big enough deal to shut down an entire website that someone spent a lot of time and money on. Maybe there should be some kind of act to protect copyright information happening, but shutting it completely down is a bit ridiculous and a waste of time doing. Why should we care that much of copyright anyways it is free publicity anyways. Thanks for the great read. Zach
